Report: | On a cold night at Rodmersham, with the courts actually feeling colder than the car park, surprisingly overall it was the home team who found the conditions trickier than the visitors - or maybe thats just because there were more losers on the home teams side!
The match got off to a quick start between myself and Malcolm, but from the outset it was very clear that neither of us has had much court time over the last few months. Things seemed to see saw one way or the other in 3 of the games with 2 going fairly tight on points, ultimately Mal played a little less rubbish than I did and won in 5 very poor quality games, with my last shot, an open court forehand volley not even making the front wall... One point I would make is that we didn't really notice the courts were slippery and we can't blame them for the bad squash.
Sam and Joe were also on at the same time, so I didn't see much of the game, but what I did see, saw Joe getting frustrated with the conditions and 'slippery surface', but Sam seeming to take it in his stride maybe the huge surface area of his oversize feet helped, he worked and twisted Joe around enough that he felt uncomfortable and ultimately Sam came through almost in 3 after match balls in the 3rd, but in 4 games, with some very long rallies.
Dec and Ishtiaq - I didn't see any of it at all, but another Rodmersham player moaning about the temperature and the slippery conditions - funny enough Ishtiaq didn't complain and won in 4 games, with an easy 4th by the look of the score sheet.
Ban and Graham then took to the ice box also known as Court 1 to do battle, Ben had the better of Graham in the last outing as I remember but tonight was a different matter. Ben at times played some really good squash but as in other matches his frustration started to show, and he too blamed the 'slippery court' for a lot of the points he was losing. Ultimately Graham moved and ran well jumping, skidding and running around Ben to get to the ball and came through, as with Ishtiaq not really noticing the slipperiness in - 3 games.
So by this stage the home team were 3:1 down, as the last match went on.
Ed and Stuart played on the much warmer Court 2 which was just above freezing in what turned out to be the match of the night.
Ed very quickly lost the first and made little more impression in the 2nd, but some between games coaching from the oldest member of the team (by almost 20 years - bloody hell) saw him take a small amount of the advice on board, and the momentum started to swing the other way. Ed took the 3rd game, then more between games coaching saw him improve a little more and a comeback seemed possible. The 5th game saw Ed take a big lead of 7:1 before Stuart started to claw it back, but some tight drops and great retrieving saw Ed complete the comeback and take it 3:2.
A great nights squash, if a little cold on court and notable that the ones who complained the most were the ones who lost, me included, and the anticipated 5:0 loss turned out to be a fairly close 3:2 loss instead.
Bring on the Summer League... Please
