| Report: | Before the match all had gone wrong for Maidstone losing both of the Fray brothers, sadly Phil with a torn achilles that will lose him the rest of winter season and then at less notice George who had to be at work. Two days of texts still could not produce a 5th player. This against the top team made the result somewhat surprising but much down to the marathon matches at 1 and 4 where Mote's Ryan and Paul could not snip the 5th game. I saw most of Chris against Paul and this was a great match; previously Chris had won 3-0 and was looking to better this score except Paul was having none of it. Strangely Paul allowed Chris to get well up in every game while trying to out think Chris with failing clever shots before reverting to shear effort to crawl back often from 7-2 down but only successfully twice out of 5! I wonder what would have happened if he had played this way all the time as Chris was very tired at the end/ Having said that it was never over until Chris took the 5th match point after a reverse angle error from Paul somewhat out of the blue. |
