Report: | First off it has to be said what a great committment to squash exists when 10 people of varying ages, committed to and then turned out on one of the biggest festival nights in our country. So big thanks to the Thanet boys who did exactly that and to the Folkestone lads who never waivered.
First on was Dave vs Alex at 5. Alex, the young'un got out of the blocks and took a 6-3 lead over Dave before being clawed back in a battle of wills in the first. Dave took it 10-9 as the old body of Folkestone's own up and coming youngster warmed up to the task.
When Alex played solid squash he looked threatening but the Folkestone youngster adapted to the home courts sooner, taking control and ran out with a 3-0 to the home side.
Meanwhile on the show court no. 3 was King Arthur of Julian vs the solid Warren of Thanet. This really was setup to be a match of two equals until Arthur, who's always pulling our leg, pulled his own and had to retire at the end of the close first game (10-8 to Warren).
Mark vs Jamie was always going to be a good match and sadly can't be reported on in the manner it deserves. Mark took the first and looked relatively comfortable but Jamie, as ever, worked out his opponents strengths and weaknesses and took the next 3 but a close match all the way through. Unusually for Mark(!) he commented on Jamies ability with the boast and the nicks. That is high praise!
After the Dave-Alex bash was myself and Nigel. We'd never played each other despite our combined ages of approx 473 years. How both delightful and shitty that was. A left handed abuser of the front court versus a runner - it was only going to end one way, 3-2 to Quinny! OK so that was what was going though my mind getting back on court at 2-2 having been pulled to the front of the court to exhaustion. Luckily for the Folkestone team Nigel, having taken me apart to set himself up for the winner, uncharachtercharactercharacteristically (yes exactly that) kept hitting them in the tin (tut tut!). Luckily.
So set at 2-2 we had to await the grand arrival of Stroudy who to be fair had to pull himself away from his luxurious lifestyle of looking after other peoples money very well indeed (website available for a small commission to yours truly).
It was well worth the wait and as the clincher it couldn't have been any more exhilirating. A massive clash of styles, Stroudy with his 'don't know what a defensive shot is' versus Christian's completely rounded squash game, length, drop when in front and the most ridiculous retrieving for a 117 year old man.
Rob by virtue of the full-on attack and low drives took the first 9-3. Christian reacted with a comfortable 9-4 in the second. Rob 9-2 in the 3rd back on the attack but longer rallies and both starting to breathe v heavily. The 4th got sloggier with Xian taking the mid game indecision period by the scruff of the neck but Rob fighting back but 9-7 to Xian.
The last game could really have gone either way but Robs new found fitness and his ability to push the ball towards the nick at every opportunity saw him over the line. 3-2 to Rob.
A superb team turned up from Thanet as was further highlighted by (what I'm delighted to say) the largest bar bill from any other game I've had the pleasure to play in. Thanks to everyone for a great night of squash and natter. Good look to Arthur as he may be out for a few weeks and that weakens the whole league.
